PLANT ADAPTATION
Grasses are adapted to hot, dry areas: they have long, narrow leaves that lose less water than larger leaves do and their root systems are extensive and deep so that they can acquire water even during drought conditions.
Most grasses are in the family Poaceae and share the grass characteristics of narrow, linear leaves. They often have unoticeable flowers and rhizomes or stolons (creeping roots or stems)
Many grassland plants have silica throughout their tissue. Silica is what sand is mainly composed of and it makes grass strong and hard to chew and digest. They are very strong growers, accumulating a large amount of biomass each growing season, and their seeds are dispersed by wind or animals.
plants living in grasslands must be adapted to taking advantage of spring rains to grow and also to tolerating drought. Grasses have very long root systems that can reach down to get water and they lose less water through their leaves than many other plants.
Some prairie trees have thick bark to resist fire because the climate is so dry most the year.
ANIMAL ADAPTATION
Thereare 200 kinds of species that grasslands support whitch may include foxes, deer, mice, birds, lions, tigers, insects, and many others
The animals of the grassland adapt by useing thier resources around them for example inscets mice and reptiles use the tall grasses around them to hide in from preditors, the preditors also use the grasses they use them for camalfloge as they're hunting.
The animals also adapt by shedding to cool off during hot dry season and they grow it back as they need it in the cold winter season.
Many prairie animals are adapted for nocturnal life; that is, they are active at night, which helps conceal their presence from predators.
GRASSLAND CLIMATE
The yearly average of rain fall is 53.59 centimeters.
They yearly average temerature is about as low as -40 in the winter, and as high as 70 in the summmer.
Precipitation in the prairies can reach from about 12.6 inches in the shortgrass prairie to 21.7 inches in the tallgrass prairies.
There is usually a long dry period during the summer months. Every 30 years or so there is a long drought period which lasts for several years.
